Qualcomm and Meta Join Forces To Develop Customized Chips for the Metaverse

The companies will team up to deliver next-generation platforms and core technologies “to accelerate a fully realized metaverse”.

Tech giant Qualcomm and Facebook holding Meta has announced a multi-year agreement to collaborate on customized virtual reality chipsets powered by Snapdragon extended reality (XR) platforms and technologies for the Meta Quest virtual reality platform.

With the companies having already worked together on virtual reality for over seven years (most recently with Meta Quest 2), the agreement “solidifies the mutual commitment to deliver multiple generations of premium devices and experiences powered by custom VR platforms in the years to come”, the companies declared on a joint statement. In other words, the new partnership seeks to produce chips with and advanced designs, based on Qualcomm’s XR technology and aimed at “accelerate a fully realized metaverse”.

“These chipsets will help us keep pushing virtual reality to its limits and deliver awesome experiences,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Meta Founder and CEO. “Unlike mobile phones, building virtual reality brings novel, multi-dimensional challenges in spatial computing, cost, and form factor. As we continue to build more advanced capabilities and experiences for virtual and augmented reality, it has become more important to build specialized technologies to power our future VR headsets and other devices.”
