Ethereum’s Co-founder Unveils Network Overhaul Plans to Address Staking, Scalability, and Security on the Network.

Ethereum’s co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, recently shared his comprehensive vision for the future of Ethereum, emphasizing the need for significant changes to address key issues such as staking centralization and scalability.

During an interview with the NFT platform Defiant in Turkey, Buterin stressed the importance of creating healthier staking pools to improve decentralization. He expressed concern over the current state of staking pools, suggesting a redesign of the staking system to mitigate these issues.

A major part of his plan involves the upcoming EIP-4844 upgrade, also known as Danksharding. This upgrade is expected to enhance Ethereum’s scalability and efficiency by increasing the data map space to 16 Megabytes per slot.

Buterin also touched upon the shift towards off-chain data solutions for improved security. He mentioned the Plasma concept, which he discussed recently, as a prime example of this shift. He also highlighted the ongoing work on Merkle trees, SNARKs, and other EVM improvements.

To democratize future network changes, Buterin proposed a voting system that could potentially eliminate the need for hard forks. He also explored advanced concepts like private mempools, ERC-4337, code pre-compilation, and Zero-Knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machines (ZK-EVMs), emphasizing their role in enhancing network performance and user security.

Buterin advocated for a reduced reliance on centralized servers, promoting advancements like the Portal Network and Helios for a more decentralized peer-to-peer network. He emphasized the importance of empowering users to independently verify data.

He revisited the concept of Plasma, a scaling solution he co-invented with Joseph Poon, noting its improved compatibility with complex systems due to the integration of Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge (ZK-SNARKs).

The proposed changes aim to make Ethereum more scalable, secure, and efficient, potentially lowering barriers for new users and developers, and fostering a more inclusive and robust ecosystem.

Buterin concluded with an optimistic outlook, celebrating Ethereum’s successful transition to proof-of-stake and highlighting progress in scalability solutions and security advancements. He expressed excitement over the progress made in hard areas like the Merge, scalability solutions like Arbitrum and zk-Sync, and Dank-Sharding. He emphasized that only one of Dank-Sharding or Plasma needs to succeed for Ethereum to be scalable, lifting a significant burden off his shoulders.
